Queenstown Wedding Vendor Spotlight: Emily Plum Makeup Artist

Ok, so this is a brand new thing for the Blog…I’ve decided that every couple of weeks or so I’m going to pick one super-cool Queenstown Vendor, ask them a few questions about who they are and what they do and post the results here.

For my very first Queenstown Wedding Vendor Spotlight I’ve chosen the very talented and awesome Emily Plum, Makeup Artist.  So without further ado, here are my stupid questions and Miss Plum’s switched-on-and-to-the-point answers…

Hello Miss Plum! Please start off by telling us who you are, what your business is called and how people can get in touch with you.

My name is Emily Plum and my business is called Emily Plum Makeup Artist. People can get in touch with me by email at emilyplum78@hotmail.com or on my mobile at +64(0)21 211 5342

If you had to sum up your business/how you do what you do in 3 words, what would those 3 words be?

I makeup faces.

How long have you been working in your chosen profession/in the wedding industry?

I graduated in 1998 with a diploma in Film and TV Makeup. Following that I worked in cosmetics for Lush, Red Earth, Napoleon Perdis. In 2006 I became the Head Makeup Trainer at SRA in Akld, teaching Makeup for Fashion, Film, Photography and SPFX and Managing a Team of Makeup Trainers. I arrived in Queenstown in 2009 and have been Freelancing in Bridal Makeup and Commercial Work.

How did you get into your profession/the whole wedding thing in the first place?  What’s your story?

It all began at Intermediate, I was that girl wearing lipstick and eyeliner to school. I started modelling at 13 and was more interested in the makeup application rather than being in front of the camera. Im also a bit of a perfectionist about my own makeup, I am very particular about what I like on my face and how its done 🙂 While I worked on weddings in Auckland, my main gig was Music Video’s and Fashion. Queenstown is the hub of destination Weddings in New Zealand. I have bookings that range from traditional bridal, heli weddings, elopements, pre/post wedding shoots. Weddings also work well around my children.

What’s the craziest wedding experience you’ve encountered in your professional career?  (No names please).  How did you deal with it?  What did you learn from it?

I have to say that most Weddings have gone off without a hitch. I like to maintain a calm working environment, its not my day its about the bride, so, so long as she is happy and kept happy thats my main priority. Plus I dont take any crap. 🙂

Can you tell us about one of your proudest moments as a wedding pro?

I had a lovely couple from Melbourne who got married recently, they were both so styley, alternative and weddingly unconventional. Easy to talk to and we got along really well. Her dress was vintage and green, she had a fascinater instead of a veil and wanted a 1920’s look. She was wrapped with her makeup. She told me while I was making her up that she chose me because of my tattoo’s and that I seemed most like her. We had lots of contact in email before they arrived as we didnt have a trial before the day, so I felt like I already knew her style and what she wanted. In person on the day of the wedding it was like we had been friends for ages. I love moments like that, thats what makes the job cool. The connection with people on that level.

Do you have any tips/words of wisdom for all the brides- and grooms-to-be out there?  (Can be related to your profession or just general wedding wisdom).

Use Pinterest or an app that helps you convey your ideas, style, colour, theme. Look after your skin. Drink water, eat well, sleep. Makeup is for enhancing your natural beauty. You cant just wear it for one day and expect to look like Beyonce.

Ok, last question, and this is a very important one…if you could be any super-hero (or villain) you wanted who would you be and why?  If you’re not into super-heros you can replace the word “super-hero” with “movie character”.

Well I’d be Batman of course! He has a cape and gets the drive the Batmobile. And Gotham City would be a pretty cool place to live. Oh and he has a special helper, Robin. I’d love a special helper some days 🙂

Thanks Miss Plum!  There you have it peoples, if you’re into makeup perfection with an edge, Emily Plum is the Wedding Makeup Artist for you!
